Sextant Tutorial: The Principle of the Sextant
North of the equator latitude is a positive number from 0 to 90, south of the equator latitude is a negative number from 0 to -90. Longitude is positive east of the Prime Meridian in London, and negative west of London, until 180 degrees from London where -180 and +180 meet. These describe the same position: N 30 W 80 is the same as 30,-80 S 30 E 80 is the same as -30,80 You can enter in the numeric string into the location field of your map app and it will move to that GPS position. The opposite side of the Earth from any position is the same latitude with the opposite polarity and the latitude is 180 degrees different from the original location. The points are known as antipodes of each other. The position 45,90 or N 45 E 90 has an antipode of -45,-90 or S 45 W 90 The longitude of the antipodes will always be 180 degrees different from the original point but with opposite polarity, but from 0 or 180 degrees the polarity of the antipode is irrelevant.
Wait.......deviation is local. So how do you swing a compass and create a compass deviation card at a given location, so that it will be useful to the user at different locations that have different deviation values?
COULD U PLEASE EXPLAIN Loren Turn ?
So if we are PDV and another vessel is RAM or CBD or NUC - it doesnt say we cant alter to port, coz this sub-paragraph only applied when both vessels are same status - power-driven vessel , right???
is this apply if no risk of collision
Good one.
I’m new to this channel. And nautical navigation in general. Great content. I’m rowing across the Atlantic this December for charity and have been training in Portland/Weymouth where the tides when rowing really influence what you can and cannot do.. With this rule, is it safe to assume that the tide will be stronger at those times when 3 blocks are represented?
Good day, so if we are PDV and we have let's say NUC vessel crossing from our port side we can easily alter to port? Because even if rule 17 says that we should not alter to port side - it is applied between two PDVs, but the NUC is a different status from PDV, correct?
Super cystal diamond clear mate!!!!!glad i find this video super quick
Thank you so much have used your entire series to help me with my YM exams
Just want to be sure of my latitude
Great jon
Such a great referance cheers
Thank you so so much these videos are the best
awesome
Thank you ❤
Sir my 8 point is not clear
Sir what is the best spot to take bearing?
Well explained thanks
I needed to quickly refresh the rules for examination. Did a speed run through all your videos. Fantastic concise explanation. Thanks.
One easy way I was taught was: RAG boat: Red above Green for sailing boats GAW trawl: Green above white for trawlers WAW shoot: white above white shooting nets WARp haul: White above Red hauling nets RARe stuck: Red above red nets fast RAW fish: red above white for fishing vls WAR pilot: White above red for pilot vls Yellow purse: purse seiners 2 yellow lights
Plastic sextants are also much lighter than metallic ones. If you ever used a sextant in heavy or rolling seas you know what advantage this is 😊
Excellent work.
W❤
Top mark is St George cross os emergency reck marking buoy
Single longer one
Excellent. Thank you
The best
I only knew about your other channel and needed to review running fixes. I was like, wait a minute I know this voice 😮
what happend if the speed its bigger than your 2 waypoint?
Very helpful, thanks.
@CasualNavigationAcademy great video but this contradicts your video on "working with set and drift on a nautical chart". It should be two arrows for course over ground, one arrow for course to steer!
In first example you take to port tho how does that work?
Great explanation
Can you do a tutorial on how to sheer a sheep correctly?
I'm definitely too dumb for this.
Ig thats true for a lot of us
Very good explanation. A trig' ready-reckoner could be useful for the final chart fix perhaps (or, a scientific calculator). I've just returned from a trip on the "Royal Clipper" (Caribbean) and the navigating officer took me through their star maps and sextant use for Sirius, Betelgeuse and the Big Dipper (Plough). Unfortunately, the Southern Cross wasn't visible those nights.....Nice to know they can still do it the 'old fashioned' way ! I did also practice taking bearings from the ship's port compass which was gimballed and had very good sighting rings.
Very clear information and explanations on all your videos. Thank you so much.
What is the hierarchy if it is a boat with oars, a remote control sale boat a remote control power driven vessel?
Thank you, sir for the reinforcement to my learning of Nautical sciences. I'm in matric(grade 12) and my mark will be very useful for the course I would like to do after school so I may board a ship as a cadet. Your explainations are simple and direct, very helpful for remembering the rules.
Bhai are u reading colregs in school?
@bharathwajvasudevan9904 Yes. My school has it from Grade 10 to 12 as an eighth subject.
@@thewonderer7755 wow. Thats surprising. Which country?
@@bharathwajvasudevan9904 South Africa 🇿🇦. I think my school is the only school that teaches it as a subject of highschoolers.
@@thewonderer7755 great. All the best. I was also mentored by a South African officer in my beginner days.
How this proves the earth being a ball is truly the dumbest amd most braindead things ever
The sextant doesn't prove the Earth to be a globe. It just measures an angle. The sight reduction however relies on spherical trigonometry. Celestial navigation as practiced assumes a globe with a mean radius of 3440.1 nautical miles.
It's not hard to understand that on a FE Polaris would never drop one degre every 60 NM but basic geometry is not for everyone.
I got a GPS but I'm still watchin' this video
Awesome animation as well as explanation. Thanx man for the effort.
When i can do this correctly and confidentially, deserve to be Captain and Commander, without a doubt
Get it Right, or be lost at sea, forever. Not for dummies, At All. Very VERY Important!
